Roller Derby has been so much fun lately. A couple of weeks ago I helped out at one of the fringe bouts setting up the track and selling raffle tickets. I had a great time cheering on our team and getting pikachu painted on my face. I finally settled on my derby name 'Smash Ketchum', as a wee homage to my love for pokemon! Lani's as cheeky as ever, and her birthday is quickly approaching! (As is the visit from my parents, weee!) And see those huge Olympic rings up there? I think Lani will probably be super sad when they are gone. She sure LOVES them!aa :)

Twenty Two Months!

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Late with this as usual, but we're on the home stretch to two years now! Two weeks to twenty three months and then... and then! Two years. Wow. She amazes us more and more every single day. She is the chattiest little cookie, ever. She's really started to grasp sentences, but our favorite things are definitely the "Loves you, Mama"s (& Daddys!) and the "thanks you, Mama"s. SO SWEET. Last week she started her 'gym nippers' class. We had done 'Monkey Music' for almost a year and it was time for a change. She was pretty cranky during her first class (though she did enjoy herself), so we're hoping number two will be a bit more fun.
We're about 1 month and a week away from something REALLY exciting... and that's my parents coming to Scotland (from the US) for 20 days. My Dad has never met Lani and hasn't seen me in over three years and the last time my Mom was here was for Lani's birth. So to say that I'm excited would be a massive understatement. I absolutely cannot wait and also I'm really looking forward to their help getting the party ready. You really, really realize how much you took your parents for granted when you move 6000 miles away from them. I only wish they were coming here to stay permanently, but alas.
The next two months are going to be really awesome, just like this amazing toddler is everyday. I know I've said it before, but I could say it again everyday. It's true... me and Ryan? We are SO lucky.

Wood Peg Dolls

Thursday, August 9, 2012

Last week I posted photos from Lani's 21 month birthday on my facebook page. A friend of mine from highschool, Lisa Penney, who has always been a brilliant artist messaged me a few days later to show me the gorgeous custom wood peg doll she had made of Lani based on her photos. I was blown away, so accurate and SO adorable, so I wanted to share the photos on my blog. Isn't she talented? AND you can even order a custom wood peg doll from her of your own child! I actually can't wait for it to arrive in the mail so I can see it in person.

Yesterday was my 28th Birthday. Wow, does time fly. It's hard to believe that I'm MUCH closer to 30 now than 20. I had a lovely time with friends from Roller Derby (and Ry of course) and drank lots of beer but didn't get hungover so that's always nice. Plus vegan nachos and vegan sushi is always a great way to round  up the end of the week. :)

Twenty one months old!

Saturday, August 4, 2012

Well, I'm always late on these darn things, and Lani is actually a few days away away from being twenty two months! A lot has happened in the last few weeks and everday Lani is learning something new. Toddlerhood is magical, isn't it? It's also so tough!

About 5 weeks ago, Lani stopped sleeping through the night, and would only fall back asleep if we put her in our bed. I was basically gutted. It was also taking us over an hour some nights to get her down to sleep. We don't believe in sleep training or crying-it-out, but this was getting insane. I decided it was time to get rid of her afternoon nap. She's been sleeping from 11-1:30 everyday, but I was rocking her down for that nap. So away it went. She's still fallen asleep every other day since we started, but I only let her nap for 30 minutes or so and it's made bed time so much easier.

There's been lots of changes afoot, not only finally doing away with her follow on formula, but not giving her a sippy cup of almond milk before bed (instead having it with dinner). We started letting her fall asleep in our bed, with no rocking, and then laying her in her crib. She still wakes in the night, but it's only been taking 10 minutes or so to get her down. Though we've still had a few troublesome nights, including last thursday where it took TWO HOURS for her to fall asleep. Gah!

Last friday, I went to clean the ball pit balls from under her bed and discovered (to my absolute horror) mold growing underneath her crib. We threw the entire thing, mattress and all out that night and she's been sleeping in our bed since. Ryan's Nana generously bought Lani a new 'big girl' (a single) from Ikea on Sunday, but we haven't been able to get it set up for her yet as they were out of stock of the slats! Anyway, I'm looking forward to posting photos of it once everything is put together. (And hoping she starts sleeping the whole night in it too!)

As for Lani's development, she's still such a joy. She talks all the time, loves to run in a circle, swing on the swings and take baths. She says such funny things like shouting "do it!!!" when she wants you to help her take a bite of her food with her fork or spoon. She also says things like "it's stuck", "stop it", "da boy", the list goes on and on. She can name pretty much anything you ask her to and we're working on our colors at the moment. She's progressing so quickly I wonder if she's going to be proper speaking full sentences by her second birthday. Now if only we could get her to use her potty.......

We hardly ever use our stroller anymore either. She wears her littlelife lady bug packpack and holds our hand (with the leash part up around my elbow) and is usually happy to walk most of the way, though we do carry her when she asks. She's such a joy, such a funny, silly little thing and we're so lucky she is ours.
